Information and communication
technologies : state-of-the-art and take off.
The one interested in PACA's Information and Communication Technologies industry
will notice particularities sometimes disconcerting.
According to a recent survey, one out of four companies has its own web site.
Companies computerisation rate in the region reaches 72%, among which 45% use
an internal network and 61% an internet connection.
Comparing these figures to the size of the surveyed companies highlights 80% of
them have an internet connection when employing more than 50 people. But curiously,
there is no connectivity between the size and the fact companies have or don't
have a web site.

The regional figures for IT equipment are slightly higher
than the national average, but still have to improve : the geographically most
distant areas from important urban centers are also the one with the highest connection
rates for professional use in the region. |
For instance 37% of the companies
established in Hautes Alpes are equipped with a web site, this is the highest
rate is PACA.
This underlines the importance internet has reached and the key role it plays
for disenclaving the territories.
The region enjoys a very contrasted landscape which is also the reason of the
differences it faces with companies, implantation-wise.
Marseille and Nice, the two poles of attraction are dragging almost all companies
operating in the IT industry of the region. And it is still very difficult for
other areas to compete. Two main reasons to this disparity : the large cities
are linked to a high speed network, and they are close to universities and research
centres. Programs are implemented in order to cover the whole region with a high
speed network. This will restitute their attractivity to the neighbouring areas.
The stake is huge because of the strategic location of Provence Alpes Côte d'Azur
: at the crossroads of three countries and on a traditionally North/South exchange
stream.
This geographic specificity has found its natural extension in the IT field and
the area is already playing its key role in this regard. But the issue is : how
to harmonise the territorial space, how to achieve a repartition of implantation.
Indeed, international group are investing or establishing branches in PACA, we
know the area is attractive, maintaining this attractivity depends on the geographic
repartition of investments.
